Beta Testers

Thank you for testing. Here's what I'm hoping to learn from you — and what to expect from the current build.

What I’d most like to hear

Anything, honestly — but these are the questions I keep turning over:

  • Is setup easy? From install to your first real workout: where did you hesitate, what did you have to guess, what did you have to look up?
  • Is this approach a winner? Audio-first, phone in the pocket, music as part of the workout. Does it change how you train, or is it a novelty that wears off after a week?
  • Would you use an autonomous Apple Watch app that had no music? Phone in the locker, everything from the wrist — the voice, the logging, the timers, the memos — but no Apple Music: none of your clips, none of your playlist, only the built-in clips. See the roadmap for why. A plain yes or no is useful; a paragraph is gold.
  • Which import formats would you like to see? Send me an example export and I’ll get it working in short order.
  • Is the lack of Spotify the only thing holding you back?
  • Would you be interested in an Android version? I’m unsure I could integrate music the way it works on the iPhone — would that be a deal breaker?
  • Do you ever run Gym Jockey with only your playlist (no clips), or in silence (no music at all)? I’d like to know whether those modes are real for anyone but me.

Give it two workouts

One ask before you judge it: stick it out for at least two of the same workout. Gym Jockey takes a different approach, and different takes a little time — the first session is spent learning the app as much as lifting; the second is where you find out whether it works for you. Some things that help:

  • Try the playgrounds. The headphone commands, Siri and the heart-rate timer, each practiced on its own, without a workout running. Eyes Free teaches you the player by touch. Two minutes there saves fumbling under the bar.
  • Don’t feel you have to configure everything. There’s far more to adjust than in a typical app, and for some people that feels like homework. The defaults should work for most people most of the time; tune what bothers you, when it bothers you, not before.
  • The first session asks a lot. Loads, ranges, what you’re tracking — the app has nothing to go on yet. It gets quieter fast: by the third session it mostly already knows.

Things to know about the current release

Rough edges, so they don’t surprise you:

  • The built-in music is a few placeholders. The Gym Jockey clip source — the one that works without an Apple Music subscription — exists, but there’s little in it yet. I’m willing to invest in it if there’s enough interest. Know anyone who’d like to create clips?

[Chris adds to this list as things come up.]
